The duty-paid aluminium premium in Rotterdam reached 533 USD/t on 23 September 2026, up 10 USD/t on the week, according to CRU Group. Six days later the LME price slipped to 3,223 USD/t, its lowest level since August, per Trading Economics. That is the opening picture for aluminium premiums Q4 2026: the exchange price fell while the European surcharge on top of it rose.

Europe is not the whole story, however. Producers offered Japanese buyers fourth-quarter premiums 18 to 22 percent below the third quarter, and the US Midwest premium eased from its June record. At the same time, the 2027 contract round opens with LME Week on 19 October. For a buyer in Mexico, Colombia or Spain, the delivered price is the LME plus a regional premium plus conversion and freight.

Aluminium premiums Q4 2026: three benchmarks, three directions

The table below summarises the aluminium premiums Q4 2026 readings available at the end of September, each with its source and date.

Each benchmark answers to its own supply, duty regime and freight. Therefore, an Asian-origin offer and a European one sit in two different premium markets.

Why the premium gets negotiated apart from the LME

The all-in price of primary aluminium has three layers: the LME price, the regional premium for duty-paid metal in a given region, and conversion plus freight to the plant. Sellers quote the premium separately because it moves for different reasons than the exchange price.

September made that visible. On 25 September the LME cash bid stood at 3,253 USD/t, according to AL Circle, with opening stocks unchanged at 241,375 tonnes. Four days later the price sat at 3,223 USD/t. Meanwhile, the Rotterdam premium moved the other way. A buyer who only tracks the LME screen saw the metal get cheaper, yet the duty-paid premium added 10 USD/t that same week. Whether the delivered cost rose or fell depends on the premium clause, not on the exchange alone. That is why the two layers deserve separate negotiation and separate date stamps.

Europe: from the April peak to a September rebound

Fastmarkets assessed the P1020A in-warehouse duty-paid Rotterdam premium at 460 to 510 USD/t on 28 August 2026. That was 17.5 percent below the 2026 high of 575 to 600 USD/t set on 2 April. The 6063 billet premium DDP Italy followed, at 1,075 to 1,150 USD/t on 28 August, 11 percent under its 5 June peak. Fastmarkets described the long-term view as bearish, with most expecting further declines as Middle East volumes grow.

September tested that consensus. CRU’s 25 September note put the duty-paid premium at 533 USD/t and the spread between duty-paid and duty-unpaid metal at 79 USD/t. CRU cited scarcity of duty-paid metal in the short term, vessel delays and rising logistics costs. It also said the outlook for both price and premium remains favourable for the fourth quarter. Two readings now coexist: structural decline and a near-term shortage of cleared metal. For European buyers, aluminium premiums Q4 2026 start from a rebound, not from the summer floor. Duty is not the only European line item for 2027 either, as we explained in our note on CBAM and downstream aluminium products.

Asia and the United States move the other way

Japan: fourth-quarter offers down 18 to 22 percent

On 2 September, Reuters, via Mining.com, reported that top global producers had offered Japanese buyers 310 to 325 USD/t for October to December shipments. That is 18 to 22 percent below the 395 USD/t agreed for July to September. The lower offers reflect a positive progress report on Middle East production and softer premiums in Europe. The Japanese premium is the benchmark for Asian-origin metal at Latin American ports, so an offer still priced off the third quarter deserves a question. At the time of writing we had not seen a confirmed settlement.

US Midwest: lower, but not low

The US Midwest premium stood at 1.09 USD/lb, or 2,403 USD/t, on 10 September, according to Reuters via Mining.com. It had eased from a record 1.19 USD/lb in June on hopes of a lower tariff on Canadian material. Alcoa CFO Molly Beerman said the US needs to import around 4 million tons a year and Canada can supply only 3 million. In her words, “we don’t see Midwest dropping significantly”. While the Midwest sits above 2,000 USD/t, Canadian and US units flow north and Mexico competes for what remains. We covered the dispute itself in our note on the Canada aluminium tariff war.

The supply side: why premiums do not collapse when the LME slips

The production data explains the floor under aluminium premiums Q4 2026. According to BigMint, using International Aluminium Institute figures, global primary output from January to August 2026 reached 48.60 million tonnes, 0.9 percent below the same period in 2025. The Gulf Cooperation Council produced 2.86 million tonnes, down 30.4 percent. China, in contrast, produced 30.09 million tonnes, up 2.5 percent, with a record 3.98 million tonnes in August alone.

Strip out China and the rest of the world produced less than a year earlier. Therefore, the returning Middle East volumes behind the bearish view had not yet shown up in the output numbers. They may appear in the fourth quarter, or they may not. This is also why the LME slip and the premium rise do not contradict each other. The exchange prices global metal, whereas the premium prices cleared metal in one region right now.

What to check before fixing Q4 and the 2027 contract

None of this says where aluminium premiums Q4 2026 go next. What the September data does support is a list of checks for the contract round that opens with LME Week on 19 October.

  • Ask for the LME and the premium as separate lines. A single all-in number hides which layer moved.
  • Date-stamp the premium reference. Rotterdam duty-paid went from 460 to 510 USD/t in late August to 533 USD/t on 23 September.
  • Name the benchmark. Duty-paid Rotterdam, duty-unpaid Rotterdam, the Japanese quarterly premium and the US Midwest are not interchangeable.
  • For extrusion billet, compare both routes. The 6063 billet premium DDP Italy was 1,075 to 1,150 USD/t in late August, against an ingot premium of 460 to 510 USD/t plus conversion.

For Mexico there is one open variable. On 28 September, Expansión reported that five US steel associations asked President Trump to keep Section 232 tariffs unchanged. Mexico is seeking a cut from the 50 percent rate on steel and aluminium before the end of 2026, ideally before the 3 November midterms. The outcome decides how much North American metal stays available for Mexican ports. Until then, it is a scenario, not a fact.

Aluminium premiums Q4 2026 are three markets, not one. Allinx trades aluminium and other metallurgical materials across Latin America and Europe, backed by the logistics and customs teams of BiiSmart Group. We can put on the table a delivered quote at your destination and an analysis of origin and applicable duty for each option. We do not offer a view on where the price goes next. Contact the Allinx team with your specification and destination, and we will build the comparison on current data.
